USS New Orleans – Harold Anderson WWII

If you have been following my Anderson family details or the details on the veterans in my family tree you may already be aware of my Grandpa’s brother Harold Anderson and the fact that he was on the USS New Orleans during WWII. Harold was on the New Orleans at Pearl Harbor and was killed in action November 28, 1942 in Gudalcanal.

The USS New Orleans has an interesting story. When Harold was killed the front third of the ship was blown off and the rest of the ship survived, was repaired and saw further action in the war.

The most interesting piece though is that in July of 2025 dive teams found and identified the bow of the ship at the bottom of Iron Bottom Sound.

This article from the WWII Museum talks about how the ship was damaged, the heroic efforts to keep the rest of the ship afloat and has the feed from the nautilus that identified the wreckage. It also contains photos of the ship that illustrate the extent of the damage.

It’s unfortunate that Harold’s parents and siblings are no longer alive to know that Harold’s final resting place has been located, but there are family members who still honor his memory and this is such an exciting find!
