This weekend I went to the Vawter Family Association meeting and had a great time meeting some new cousins! For reference, my nearest Vawter relative is my 3rd Great Grandmother Louisiana Vawter who marred James Hagerdon. This ties directly to my Great Grandmother Gladys Hagerdon Anderson.
One of the big reasons I wanted to go to the meeting was because the association has a great websitse and genealogist. Through their information I was able to tie Louisiana’s father Edmund to a Vawter family and once I was able to fit into the family I quickly had all of the information to apply for a Revolutionary War Patriot, Benjamin Vawter.
The Vawter family also ties back to the Vawter Church in Essex County, VA. This church will celebrate 300 years coming up here soon. I’m not 100% sure if my line ties into the church founders directly, but it’s still fun to be part of something that is actually older than the United States.
As an added bonus, the meeting was held in Ft. Wayne, Indiana home to the 2nd largest genealogy research library in the United States. I spent the better part of an afternoon there and was amazed at the pieces they have in the collection. I didn’t come really prepared to do some solid research, but I did poke around with a few things I had questions on and it was a good afternoon. I highly recommend checking out the library if you are close.
