The Things we Save

Over Christmas I gathered a few things from my grandparents safe (with permission of course), and as we went through the contents it is just so interesting what people choose to save throughout time.

In the safe there were cancelled checked going back to the 1960’s, a fair bit of random paperwork that I’m not even sure how to categorize, and then the things that it appeared had been purposefully included in the safe over time.

Those things included, birth, baptism and confirmation documents, elementary and high school diplomas, a 4-H Swine project record book from 1939, but only one so I”m not sure if this project was special or if it was the only one that Grandpa participated in, some boy scout cards, high school letter awards, the Univeristy of Nebraska Student Handbook from 1944-1945, a few programs from the University of Nebraska Football program, mememtos from the commissioning of the USS Harrier in WWII, WWII medals and a ladies ring that at this moment no one knows the story behind. We also found some stock certificates and other pieces that so far seem to all be from defunct companies, but it did send us on a search to see what we could find!

That made me take inventory of some of the things I have held onto and saved over time and wonder what someone might think of them if they found them, or if they give a good picture of what things were important enough to me that I saved them, or if someone at some point in time will think they are all “junk”, or if maybe I’ve been saving “junk” and need to start purging some things :)
