Some of you may be familiar with Bess Streater Aldrich the Nebraska author. I have a copy of her book “A Lantern In Her Hand” and read it again a couple of months ago. Interestingly enough a friend of mine was doing a reading challenge from the local library to read a book from or about every state and got hung up on Nebraska. If I had known before her deadline for the challenge I could have helped her out a bit.
As I was reading the book, I mentioned it to my Grandma Maxine and she comments that her mother Meta knew Bess and was good friends with her. WOW. You never know what conversation will generate something fun like that. Grandma also stated that when her sister Lorna died so young Bess sent a sympathy card to the family. Grandma still has a lot of things that she inherited from her mother, so that card may still be floating around.
I did put in a request with History Nebraska to search the Bess Streeter Aldrich collection of correspondence to see if there were any records of letters to Meta, but they didn’t find anything. It does make sense as both families were in the same location in a fairly small town, so anything is possible. I guess you never know where and how often your family has rubbed shoulder with celebrities π
