Memorial Day Weekend – Remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice

We just returned home from a Memorial day weekend in Nebraska and it is so striking to see all of the flags in the cemetery honoring those who have served. The Big Springs cemetery seems to have a pretty large number of flags and represents a pretty high proportion of veterans in the cemetery.

As Memorial Day is dedicated to those who ultimately lost their lives in war, it always makes me so thankful that for all the number of veterans I have in my direct family tree from WWII, WWI, Civil War, War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War that there are only two who didn’t make it home. We mourn those who were casualties, but are so thankful that the others did survive their war experience.

My Grandpa Anderson’s brother Harold was killed in the Coral Sea in 1942 and I have a post detailing what I know about his war service. From what I can discern it looks like he was present at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed, but survived that day.

The other casualty of war is my 4X Great Grandfather Edmund Vawter who died in 1863 during the civil war and is buried in Bowling Green, KY. I do also have a post detailing his war service.

With gratitude today for all veterans and especially Harold and Edmund who we honor on this Memorial weekend.
