Christmas Fun

It is almost Christmas, and it looks like this may be my final post for 2022. I have a backlog of things to share and hopefully I can get back to a regular schedule in 2023 and share all the new updates plus get some additional research completed and learn a few new things.

A few years ago we started doing Christmas meals that were representative of countries of origin for our families. We started with Germany where we had Sauerbraten, Red Cabbage, Lebkuchen, Gluhwein, Black Forest Cake, and all sorts of good things. The next year we did Swedish where we had Swedish Meatballs, some Danish butter cookies, Swedish Brown Beans, Red Cabbage and some herring (that wasn’t as big a hit for some people). Then we did a Swiss dinner where we got the inspiration from Aunt Barbara who has Swiss relatives they often visit. It was a beef strognoff, some fondue, a braided bread, brussel sprouts and some good Swiss Chocolate.

This year we are showcasing the UK and thanks to a friend who is a UK national, we have some great ideas. Dinner is turkey with british style pigs in a blanket. These are sausages wrapped in bacon instead of bread. We plan to have some figgy pudding, complete with the flambe, and we will have tea and scones in the afternoon, complete with clotted cream. It also seems that Christmas in the UK is not complete without “Christmas Crackers”. I originally thought these were actual crackers like saltines or something and then realized they are party favors that you pull open and they “pop” (hence the cracker) and there are party favors inside. I’m looking forward to the adventure and it will be fun to see which county we showcase next year.
