Ancestry DNA Updates

Every so often Ancestry.com updates their ethnicity estimates and it’s always interesting to see what the updates look like. I was pretty happy with my first estimate and thought it was pretty close to the paper trail as I knew it. Then there was an update when I had something like 5% German ethnicity, and knowing that fully half of my tree was in Germany in the mid 1850’s that seemed a little strange. This last update my Germany percentage is pretty close to 25% as is the Sweden and Denmark and the England estimate. Throw in a little Scottish and Irish and that about makes up the DNA estimate for me. This one seems to be pretty accurate based on the paper trail and the randomness of DNA.

This update actually does a much better job with Cory’s ethnicity estimates. I think his first estimate was something in the single digits for his German ethnicity which seemed really strange with his grandfather Lobner a full German and some German on his father’s side too. This update has his estimate at about 25% German which looks a lot more believable.

It’s really pretty amazing how much they can determine with specific genetics coming from certain areas of the world. My Swedish genetics they even pinpoint to a specific area in Sweden and it is 100% accurate.

Now if we could find a few more cousins to help break down a few of the mysteries in the tree πŸ˜€
