I listen to a few different Genealogy podcasts and have especially liked a podcast “Research Like A Pro” led by Diana Elder and Nicole Dyer. Recently they talked about an interesting book – American Nations by Colin Woodard. This book talks about how the United States is really 11 different nations based on philosophy and origins. I found it fascinating and have ordered the book.
In the meantime, they have two blog posts on the book talking about how the different nations came about, how they approach things, and the migration patterns that your family may have followed in each one.
From what I’m seeing, our family tree branches would have fit Yankeedom, The Midlands, a few in Appalachia, some who likely fall in the Far West and maybe one or two in the Tidewater region. Their blog posts provide some interesting insights, and we’ll see how the book goes.
