For any of you who follow my ramblings, or anyone who is related through the Hagerdon line of my tree (My Great Grandmother Gladys Hagerdon Anderson) you may know that I hit a bit of a roadblock with my 4X Great Grandparents Luther Hagerdon and his wife Fanny Perry Hagerdon. They were true pioneers and were in Brown County, WI before Wisconsin was a state, then headed to Oregon in about 1850 where their eldest daughter stayed and her diary was preserved. Later we find Luther in Iowa in 1870 and then he disappears. No researchers yet have determined the parents of Fanny Perry either, so this branch provides some challenges.
Today I was doing one of my random searches in old newspapers – Newspapers.com is fabulous – and found an article of interest that was in the Oshkosh, WI, Des Moines, IA and San Francisco, CA newspaper.
In this claim, it states that the heirs of Fanny Hagerdon are laying claim to 400 acres in Oshkosh, WI that was given to Fanny as part of a government grant in about 1840. Wisconsin became a state in 1848, so this was truly wilderness in 1840.
I’m hoping to find some more details on this case through the courthouse in Oshkosh and maybe this will provide some clues as to the death date of Luther and who knows what else will turn up!
Stay tuned…..

UPDATE: Feb, 2022. I have been in contact with the appropriate historical societies and it would appear that this never made it to court as there is no record of such that has been located. It’s still in my mind though, and there may be more details later.
