This post is the start of my posts on the 7th generation of my family tree. Counting myself as Generation 1, the 7th generation is my 4X Great Grandparents. Eli Pocock and Catherine Knestrick are the parents of my 3X Great Grandfather John Wharton Pocock who is the father of my 2X Great Grandfather Glenn Pocock, and Glen is the father of my Great Grandmother Blanche Pocock who married Ben Mauser.
Eli and Catherine were among some of the early settlers of Ohio and migrated from Maryland to Ohio. I don’t have much for photos or antedotes, but we are at least able to identify the family and assign them in the right place.
As part of this bio, I saw that Eli and Catherine had a slave marked in the 1820 census. This has me puzzled about who this person was as the Northwest Ordinance specifically prohibited slavery as did the Ohio constitution. Ohio was also a major part of the Underground Railroad. When I put the question to the genealogy society in Tuscarawas County Ohio they felt that the person was most likely an indentured servant. It sounds like the indentured servants were marked as “slaves” and sometimes treated as such.
