Early German Farm House

Thanks to Cousin Orval Dehning I just finished scanning in several years of newsletters from the Dehning Family Association in Germany. So much good information is contained in those newsletters that demonstrate things the family went through in the early 1800’s, WWII and other memorable times in history. I’ll have to see if it’s permissible to share the story of one of the Dehning of his WWII experience in Germany.

In the meantime, the photo is a screen print from the 1997 newsletter and talks about the Farm Home in Germany. For some context here are a few things to know. The Dehning Family is from Lüneburg Heath which is near Hamburg, Germany. Wikipedia has some information on the area that helps give an idea of the terrain, climate and history. This article is a bit long, but it has some specific details on the layout of this style farm house as well as how long it was in use, and how the family utilized the home. It looks like of all the German ancestors I know locations for the Kallsen family and Dehning family are the only ones that would have been in an area where this style home was utilized.

One day I would love to go to the area and visit this location to see an example of the home and village that would have been nearby.
