Robert Ambler and Mary L Bartelson are Cory’s 3X Great Grandparents on his maternal side. They are the parents of Cory’s Great Great Grandmother Mary Ambler, who is the mother of his Great Grandfather Harry Seibert who is the father of his grandmother Mildred Seibert.
Every online tree had listed Mary Bartelson as the first wife of Robert Ambler and mother of Mary Ambler, but I hadn’t seen positive proof in any of the trees online and spent a bit of time researching the correctness of that relationship. In the end through Mary and Robert’s son Mark Bartelson Ambler who lived with his grandparents after his mother’s death the 1880 census confirmed the relationship. There may still be records in the Quaker records or in Pennsylvania records that provide evidence, I just haven’t located them yet.
The Ambler family is a Quaker family and were early settlers in Pennsylvania. There are indications I have seen that the Bartelson family was also connected in the Society of Friends, but I haven’t proven that yet.
One thing worth thinking about in this generation is that Mary’s brothers were of the age that they could have fought in the Civil War and nearly all of them have draft registrations found in Ancestry. As one can imagine, this is a challenging situation for the Society of Friends who are both anti violence and anti slavery. From what I can tell one of Mary’s brothers was a solider and was part of the 8th Maryland Infantry Company C where he enlisted, was eventually promoted to Corporal and eventually discharged. I can’t see that any of her other brothers fought. I see no evidence that any of Robert’s brothers were part of the war, but I did find this piece interesting
