This post is a continuation of my posts on the 6th generation of my family tree. Counting myself as Generation 1, the 6th generation is my 3X Great Grandparents. John Wharton Pocock and Lucina Patterson are the parents of my 2X Great Grandparents Glenn Pocock, and Glen is the father of my Great Grandmother Blanche Pocock who married Ben Mauser.
I have already done one post on John focusing on his Civil War Service, so I won’t repeat any of that detail here. He is also mentioned in a prior post as a First Family of Nebraska.
In John’s obituary, it is stated that he enlisted in the Overland freight service between Omaha and Denver following his time in the service and saw many exciting times and strenuous service. In addition to the stories shared in the biography, this document from the University of Nebraska on Overland Freighting in the Platte Valley will may also prove interesting for details on how tough the overland route was in the 1860’s. This paper references another book which recounts one incident with a rancher 17 miles east of Julesburg, Colorado. The rancher’s name is Dick Cleve and it has to be in Deuel County, or Keith County, NE. Further research may identify the location and where Dick Cleve was in 1864.
