George Seibert – Nevada Gold Miner

This was an interesting find as I researched Cory’s 2X Great Grandfather George Seibert through the census records and the newspapers. George is the father of Cory’s Great Grandfather Harry Seibert who is the father of his grandmother Mildred Seibert.

It started when I found George Seibert listed in Humboldt County Nevada in the 1910 census. That seemed strange to see him listed there when I knew he died in 1915 in Laurel, Nebraska. I had remembered from some brief newspaper research seeing something about him returning from Nevada, so I went back and searched the papers again.

Sure enough, he had a claim that was adjoined to the Laurel Gold Mining, Milling and Leasing company. I then wondered how the claim fared. I did find a paper by the University of Nevada that mentions the history of the area. It says that high grade gold was discovered in 1910. In 1911 it was determined that the claims were on patented railroad land. Mining activity came to a standstill until the land was purchased from the railroad. I’m not sure when that was, but the paper states that Laurel had a post office there from 1911-1913.

The images below are clips from various papers and I have included the PDF file from the University of Nevada where page 186 is the most relevant. Clicking on a photo will open the gallery and then there is an option to view full size which will allow you to zoom in as desired.
