Cory has been watching a lot of basketball lately, and it brought this story to mind. Mabel is my Great Grandfather Ben Mauser’s sister. She was the youngest of the family. In the Mauser Family history, there is a short article about the Big Springs girls Basketball Team and how crazy some of the games got in 1926 which was the year Mabel graduated from High School. It sounds like the game was pretty rough when Big Springs played Ogallala. I don’t know the original newspaper or date for the “Grandma was a Brawler” story, and I’m assuming the Keith County News. I’ve included a clipping from the Big Springs News on Mabel’s Basketball skills as well as the full page from the newspaper regarding the 1926 seniors if anyone is interested in the full thing. I haven’t yet found in my newspaper searching any information on the Big Springs / Ogallala girls game, but it will show up – grin.
