Edmund Vawter – Civil War Veteran

Edmund Vawter is my 4X Great Grandfather and a Civil War Veteran. My line to George is through my Great Grandmother Gladys Hagerdon Anderson. Gladys’s parents are Luther Hagerdon and Lena Livermore. Luther’s parents are James Hagerdon and Louisiana Vawter, Louisiana’s parents are Edmund Vawter and Sarah Follis.

Edmund was born in Kentucky in 1810.

On January 1, 1862 he enlisted in the 35th Indiana Infantry Company G. Interestingly enough on the draft list he lists his age at enlistment at 34, only 10 years older than his son John Bacon, when in reality he would have been 52 years old. He enlisted from Johnson County, Indiana and was mustered into service on March 28, 1862 for an initial period of three years.

I don’t presently have a copy of Edmunds service records from the National Archives, but plan to order them. Edmund’s service was relatively short as we learn from his pension file that he died of typhoid fever in Bowling Green, KY on Feb 2, 1863. He served the union for less than 1 year. He may have seen action in the first two battles listed for the 35th Indiana. The Battle of Perryville and possibly the Battle of Stones River. His service records will likely confirm when they arrive.

Edmund’s files are listed under Waters, Watters, and Vawter, and thankfully in applying for his pension the military was able to combine all of those names and prove it was the same person. I have also proven lineage to Edmund through the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Edmund’s family story will be interesting to tell in his Bio, as he left a second wife and one minor child at the time of his death. I’m also finding some unique things in the family and look forward to putting it all together on paper.
