We also know that before enlisting in WWII Harold was an excellent boxer. I remember Grandpa Bob telling us this, but it didn’t sink in until I found a series of articles from the Sioux City Journal on the Golden Glove Boxing Tournament in Dec 1936. Harold boxed at 109 pounds!
He made it to the semifinals and the paper on Dec 12, 1936 – Page 21 said the following:
“Harold Anderson, Laurel, Neb – A fighting mite from Laurel high school. Anderson provided plenty of fireworks as he won from Menno Saunders of Beresford. Saunders, incidentally, holds a victory over Joey Stahl of Huron who won the South Dakota flyweight title a year ago. The plucky little Anderson, who weighed in at 109 1/2, floored Saunders four time during the bout. He’ll meet Johnson as Henrikson boxes Springer in the flyweight semifinals”

In the end, Harold boxed Tommy Chosa in the semifinals as Johnson was overweight, and suffered a solar plexus punch in the first round that resulted in a technical knockout.
Here are a few clips from the paper on his efforts. I have saved every article from the paper regarding the tournament if anyone is ever interested I am happy to share
